Are cheap rechargeable batteries worth it?

Cheap NiMH is not automatically junk. Plenty of budget cells are not fake, just optimistically rated, so an AA that is honestly around 2200 mAh instead of the printed 2800 still runs remotes, clocks, toys and game controllers without complaint, at roughly half the price of the name brand. The chemistry is genuinely right for high-drain gear you recharge often, like a camera flash, flashlight or controller, which is exactly where rechargeables beat throwaway alkalines. And these are real rechargeables that take hundreds of charge cycles, so for that kind of device you really can stop buying disposables.

When it arrives, weigh it or just heft it. A genuine AA NiMH is dense at about 25 to 30 grams, so a cell that feels feather-light or reads near 14 grams on a kitchen scale is mostly empty inside and the printed capacity is fake.

Where the cheap ones cut corners

• The big advertised mAh is usually fiction

  Independent bench tests of no-name cells repeatedly find only a fraction of the printed capacity, often 10 to 30 percent of it, with one cell labelled 3000 mAh measuring just 325 to 380 mAh.
