Is a cheap PC cooling fan worth it?

For the actual job of moving air through a normal case, a front intake or a rear or top exhaust, a cheap fan is genuinely fine. Moving air is cheap to do well, and independent bench tests find a sub-$10 fan keeps pace with premium fans costing four to five times more on airflow and case-cooling noise. Brand new it is quiet, and in a cool slot at moderate RPM it will likely last years. What the extra money really buys is quieter running as the fan ages and a longer-lived bearing, not more cooling.

When it arrives, check any bundled Molex or Molex-to-SATA adapter for thin or loose pins and power the fan from a motherboard header instead if in doubt, then with the power off flick a blade and confirm it coasts smoothly and silently rather than wobbling, ticking, or grinding.
