Is a cheap air-intake turbulator worth it?

As hardware it is low-stakes. It is a passive insert with no battery, wiring or software, so it carries none of the fire, shock or firmware risks of plug-in fuel-saver gadgets, and testers who fitted one to real cars measured no meaningful change either way. So as a cheap, fully reversible engine-bay curiosity it is mostly harmless, and going cheap costs you nothing extra because the pricey brand-name Tornado was bench-tested and does the same nothing.

Do not trust the seat-of-the-pants feel or a single good tank. Run the same route several full tanks with the device out and several with it in, expect no real difference, and if you fit it anyway make sure it physically cannot rotate or shed a piece into the engine.

  The vane or fan clamps into the intake tube just ahead of the throttle body, the airflow sensor and, on turbo cars, the turbo, and the budget ones use the flimsiest plastic or bent metal. When a blade cracks or a rivet works loose from vibration the pieces get pulled downstream into the combustion chamber, and one documented failure jammed the throttle body and left a low-mileage car needing a new engine.

• It is an obstruction, not a supercharger

  Despite names like turbonator or turbine there is no motor, just a vane sitting in the airstream the engine has to pull through. Modern engines already build swirl into the intake port by design, so a vane clamped far upstream adds nothing while it does add a restriction, and turbulence plus that restriction can only cut the air reaching the cylinders.

• On a dyno it takes power away

  This is the best-documented fact about the category. When an independent lab ran vortex and tornado inserts on a dynamometer they lost more than 10 percent of peak horsepower and one raised fuel use by about 20 percent, and in Consumer Reports' own test the branded unit gave no gain on one car and slightly worse performance on another.

• Regulators tested the whole class and found nothing

  This is not the clone being worse than the real thing, the whole concept has been investigated for decades.   Positive listings and forum posts are not evidence the part did anything, because fuel economy swings with weather, route, traffic and driving style.
