Is a cheap ESR meter worth it?

For what it is actually for, a cheap ESR meter genuinely works. It runs off a battery and injects a test voltage too low to switch on the surrounding transistors and diodes, so it never touches mains and cannot shock you, and you can usually probe caps in-circuit without desoldering. Its real job is catching failing electrolytic capacitors, and it does that well. A long-time user puts the hit rate around 95%, and a genuinely bad cap reads at least ten times normal or nothing at all, so the yes or no answer you care about is unmistakable even from a coarse meter. The multifunction versions also identify transistors, diodes and resistors, with values that line up closely enough against a real bench meter for everyday sorting.

When it arrives, short the two probes together and confirm it zeros, then measure a known 1 ohm and 10 ohm resistor to check the reading tracks, and always discharge a capacitor before the probes touch it.

Where the cheap ones cut corners

• No input protection, a charged cap can kill it

  The bargain clones usually leave off the clamp diodes or discharge circuit that better meters put across the input, so touching the probes to a capacitor that still holds a charge can blow the input in one shot. The meter also does nothing to protect you, so discharge the big filter capacitors in power supplies and amplifiers yourself before you probe them.

• Rechargeable versions ship with a bare TP4056

  Many cheap tester and ESR combos now include an internal lithium cell charged by a plain TP4056 board, which is only a charger with no protection IC, so the cell can overheat or vent if abused or paired with a low-grade cell. A plain 9V-battery model sidesteps this, and if you want rechargeable look for a charge board that adds a DW01A/8205 protection chip.

• Built to the lowest cost, can arrive damaged

  These testers are assembled as cheaply as a factory can manage, and a common arrival fault is the bare LCD hanging loose on its flex ribbon cable, which twists or tears easily.

• Clones swap the precision reference for a plain zener

  The open-source design calls for a precision 2.5V reference, but the cheap builds substitute an ordinary zener diode that drifts with temperature and dents accuracy, and the original developers will not support the clones. It is fine for sorting parts, not for trusting the last digit.

• It cannot tell a shorted cap from a perfect one

  An ESR meter reads resistance, so a dead-shorted capacitor shows a very low ESR that looks exactly like a healthy one. Treat a near-zero reading on a suspect cap with caution and confirm it with a capacitance or short test.

  Capacitor datasheets and lab meters measure ESR with a 100 kHz sine wave, which these testers cannot produce, so they approximate it with a low-frequency square wave. The reading is a rough proxy, not the standardized value you would compare against a spec sheet.

• It only reads ESR on larger electrolytics

  On the common component-tester type an ESR figure is impossible below roughly 1.8µF, so small film, ceramic and MLCC capacitors get no ESR reading at all. It is really an electrolytics-only tool that measures caps of about 1µF and up.

• At sub-ohm, your leads are the error

  A healthy electrolytic reads a few hundredths of an ohm and a bad one a few ohms, so you are working in tenths of an ohm where the tester's own contacts and cables dominate. The designer warns a poor cable can turn 0.02Ω into 0.61Ω, and says not to expect good ESR accuracy.

• In-circuit, a failing cap hides behind its neighbors

  When capacitors sit in parallel on a board, the meter shows the lowest ESR of the whole group, so a failing cap can read as healthy. You have to lift one leg of the suspect cap to trust the reading, a step beginners routinely skip.
