Is a cheap weather station worth it?

For everyday home use a cheap weather station is genuinely all you need. Comfort, houseplants, a nursery, spotting a damp basement, or tracking the temperature outside only ask for readings within a few percent on humidity and a degree or so on temperature, and even budget units land in that band. The temperature side is usually the honest one, often accurate to within about a degree, and the sensing technology itself is sound and long lived in clean indoor air, so this is not throwaway junk. Where you put it, shaded and with some airflow, matters more than what you paid, and reviewers who bench tested sub thirty five dollar units found them accurate enough for real home use.

The day it arrives, run the salt test. Seal the unit in a zip bag with a bottle cap of wet table salt for 6 to 12 hours, and a saturated salt solution parks the air at 75 percent humidity, so a healthy sensor should settle near 75 percent within its rated margin. However far off it lands is your unit's real error, so you can correct for it or send it back.

  These mini stations and their remote sensors usually run on a CR2032 coin cell, and cheap no name units often ship without the secured, tool or two step battery door that US law has required since October 2023.
